But I need to get into shape first… (WRONG)

When speaking with potential new students, I hear they they are thinking that they need to get into shape first before they come in and check out a class.

On the surface this seems reasonable, but it’s completely false. Even if you can squat 500 and run a half marathon, grappling is a unique form of exercise that requires a different kind of conditioning.

It's a common misconception that one needs to be in peak physical condition before starting Jiu Jitsu.

In fact, Jiu Jitsu is an excellent way to get into shape while learning a valuable skill.

1. Jiu Jitsu is a great way to get into shape: It's a full-body workout that combines strength, flexibility, and endurance. It's a fun and engaging way to exercise, which makes it easier to stick with compared to more monotonous forms of exercise.

2. Everyone starts somewhere: No one is expected to be an expert on day one. Just like any other sport or physical activity, there's a learning curve. You'll gradually build up your skills and fitness as you train.

3. The community is supportive: Jiu-Jitsu schools often have a strong sense of community. You'll find people of all levels and abilities training together. This supportive environment can make the learning process more enjoyable and less intimidating.

4. You don't know if you like it until you try: It's impossible to know if you'll enjoy Jiu-Jitsu until you give it a go. By waiting until you're "in shape," you might miss out on a fulfilling and rewarding hobby. So, rather than using "getting into shape" as an excuse not to start Jiu Jitsu, why not use Jiu Jitsu as a fun and effective way to get into shape?
